If your paying for labor and in that far replace the bearing too if they have never been replaced. 40 years or so of duty has been long enough especially for a small bearing axle. If you pull an axle after 100,000 miles I concider that time to replace them. Its worth the extra $200 bucks or so to avoid a bad day if you can afford it.

Yes for sure could be the reason the seal went bad.

ok so, next question then:

I assume in this case i would be just replacing the outer bearing & seal...

I'm 99% sure the inners were done when I went to 4.88's.

and to that end I take it i dont need to do a new set of inner seals just cause i'm yank'n axels past em do I??

just a seal on the rear outer, bearings are pressed on the axles with a retaining plate between bearing and axle...all there is to it
