any suggestions on replacing the seal here? Is this something I could tackle fairly easily in my garage or would I be better off taking it to a shop? Any suggestions/tips/tricks would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes you can do it in with out pulling the motor. But it is not easy. The oil pan has to be removed the end bearing cap and most of the other caps will need to be loosened to get the seal out. Then you have to be very careful when replacing the seal not to cut it on the block when you are pushing it in.
I just did it on my 67 and I pulled the motor to do it. I also repaired the leaking dipstick tube and repainted the pan when I was at it. But I also pulled the engine to fix a leak on the input shaft of my trans. I felt it was easier to pull the engine than lay on the ground and try to deal with removing the trans.

I just replaced my rear main seal too. I would highly recommend taking the engine out. I can't even imagine how it could be done with the engine in. Getting the new seal in requires some fine work and you have to put a little rtv where the two halfs of the seal meet. And its not super easy to push the new seal in. You'll do a much higher quality job with the engine out and its not something you want to do again.

I have done several without removing the engine but it is much easier with the engine out.

You could also drop the tranny if that's easier for you. I did a C4 swap recently and did the rear main seal while there was no tranny in place. With the Bronco on jackstands, I could sit comfortably behind the engine.
