I am having a hard time removing the pinion gear from my d44. I have removed the pinion nut, washer and yoke, but I cannot get the gear to release from the housing. Is there another fastener that I have missed?

No, it's just the interference fit of the rear-most (closest to yoke) bearing on the pinion gear shaft. Put the pinion nut back on, smack it a few times with a hammer, and watch the pinion gear shoot out the front of the housing.
