Replacing motor mounts

I need to change my motor mounts and was looking for any tips. I tried to change one awhile back by jacking under the oil pan (with a big block of wood to distribute the jacking force) but didn't have much luck getting the mount to separate from the bracket on the frame (I had also removed the bolts retaining the mounts to the block). I couldn't find any interference where the engine/trans/t-case combo might be hitting the body and limiting things.

Any tips or something obvious I'm missing?

Thanks,
Todd Z.

I think its easiest to unbolt the mount from the block and if you can get the engine high enough you can slide the mount out and put the new one in. Do you have access to a cherry picker? that would be the easiest way to pick things up. I have one in the garage if you bring it up here.

I do have access to a cherry picker here but I might take you up on the offer. I could put my 5.0 lifting brackets back onto the engine and make it easier, I imagine.

Thanks,

Just need some chain and a couple of bolts for the heads. The lift brackets would be nice too though. I need to take some measurements of your rigs setup anyways...

I wish I had done mine when I had the transmission out for a clutch swap. My mounts are old and cracking but not "bad" yet. I wonder if I will be able to replace them with no body lift without yanking the tranny again. %)

Did my engine mounts with a floor jack and a 4x4 block, but it was a little sketchy.
Did one at a time by putting the block on the bolt line on the same side of the oil pan. Jockeying the mounts out and the new in took a bit, but it worked.

I like to look and see how much of the bolt is sticking out of the mount stud on the frame and cut that much off the new mount stud leaving enough for a full nut, making it shorter helps alot. When you jack up one side of the engine the transfer case mount is trying to hold it flat.

Not to step on NeedaBronco's toes, but I have a cherry picker at my shop in Tempe you could use if you're not planning a trip up to Prescott. I'm out for this weekend, but we could work something out for next Saturday or you could come by & pick it up today/next week. I just put a 5.0 on a stand for rebuilding, so I won't need the picker for a little while (hopefully)....

Hey Todd,

I was zero-ing in on the transmission mounts too when I first read your post. I was able to swap in the HD mounts from Driven Auto by loosening the bolts on the cross member and then removing the bolts from the motor mounts. I jacked up the engine using a floor jack and a block of wood under the oil pan. I didn't need to lift it up very high. Maybe a friendly smack on the mount w/ a hammer would help. Make sure that you don't have any binding with the throttle and/or transmission linkage.

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions, guys. I was able to jockey things around with a floor jack and a block of wood enough this afternoon to get the passenger's side changed. I had to remove the radiator shroud, unplug the two plugs on the firewall and tweak my trans dipstick a bit to allow the engine to tilt back far enough but I made it. The driver's side will be a little harder. I tried to work on it but decided I'll need to either remove the oil filter or remove the exhaust to get it out. When I got the passenger's side out, I could see a crack all the way around the rubber and apparently it wasn't one of the pinned ones. Not sure if that's part of a problem I've been having or not, but I'm going to drive it for awhile to see if things are better.

My tranny mount is a little different than stock since I have the 700 in there. It seems to allow enough flex for the engine to move up/down unlike what I think the stock setup would.
