Just have to deal with the axle splines, 78 bronco will have 31 splines stock on the axle shaft, EB's came with 28splines, but the center section is a direct fit.

So you can swap in a locker or limited slip that has 31 splines, or find a 31 spline open carrier

You sure it's 3.73, most likely 3.54. Either way, no help to you. I'd use the 3rd member casing with you 4.11 pinion. Use the 31 spline full size differential and put your 4.11 ring gear in it. The pinion depth, which is set by the casing (via shims under the pinion support) and/or the gear themselves should not change.

You will have to check backlash. Use the side adjusters next to the differential bearings with a dial indicator on the edge of the ring gear teeth. Doing it this way you will not have to buy any parts and gear setup should be limited to checking backlash (easy to do, if you don't know how we can talk you through it). If you go with a 31 spline spool or full locker, this method should still work.

what are you changing or swapping out and why? if you plan on using the full width axle then you need to swap carriers between the two so you can change the 4.11 from 28 splines to 31 splines. this is what I think you intentions are but could be wrong.

keep in mind that a 31 spline carrier can be converted to 28 splines by swapping the spider gears from one to the other as long as the two carriers are both open or both trac locs. 2/3's of the parts from an open will fit a trac loc carrier, its the clutch hub side that is different. you can not swap 28 spline carrier over to 31 spline axles because the axle opening or ID for the axle is to small. one would have to machine the axle opening for the larger 31 spline axles.

a carrier swap is much easier because one does not have to mess with the pinion depth which is some what unknown to most people and one can ruin a gear set in no time if set wrong. if you only swap the carrier then you only have to adjust the back lash.

if you do swap carriers only then measure the backlash of the 4.11 gear set before you break it down and record that number and reset the gear set to the same value.

other than that the third member itself will swap between either axle housing and all 9 inch axle housings.
