Rough Running and Surging Idle

Running a 289 with Holley 600 carb. No smog stuff.

Last time I had my Bronco out it ran great idled smooth. It has been about a month since I last drove it. Poured a little fuel straight into the carb since it had been so long cranked and it fired up after a couple of tries. Little bit of rich fuel 'smoke' at first. Bronco was running rough almost like it was missing and backfired once. After a few minutes of warm up same thing. Let it down to idle and it is surging so bad and idling so low that it is barley staying running. Pulled the PCV valve out of the valve cover and it seems to run a bit better but still pretty awful. Can see little puffs of smoke out of the now open hole in the valve cover.

(Here I should say I had this same issue a few months back after sitting for a while. I replaced the PCV valve at the time and it was running fine again... until now)

Let it run for a while stick PCV valve back in and it dies. Remove PCV valve get it started and still running horrible as before. Run it at high idle until it warms up good then shut it down. After about 15 minutes I grab the video camera because I wanted to video to give yall an idea of what was going on but it fires right up and idles smooth. Stick the PCV valve back in and running like a champ just like it had before the month long sit.

Any ideas what might be going on? I know I know drive it more and it wont sit for so long. Regardless I would like to know what is going on here. I have a feeling it was the same thing as before. I thought it was the PCV valve but more than likely the cure just came from the sit when ran to the store to get the part.

I have a 73 recently revived from sitting for about 20 years.

A valve sticks and it runs like yours for 5 minutes or so, once it gets warmed up, it runs perfectly.

Keep running Marvel Mystery oil in the gas and it should clear up.

Check your choke to make sure its fully opening and check the float level maybe its to high and its flooding a bit.

Might have some debris in the needle seat and it gets caught and floods out from time to time. Might be a good idea to rebuild the carb.
