While I don't plan to use rubber floor mats in my own Bronco if I did I would use patches of Velcro to keep them in place, that way they could be removed for cleaning or drying both the mats and underneath where they sit.

Two of the EBs I've owned had the front rubber mat from the factory. Both had extensive rust develop under them. In Az. you have to be doing something wrong to get rust anywhere. If you put the mats in, make it convenient to remove them. If for nothing else, just to dry the floor quickly.

I've owned a Cj7 and a 97 Tj (prior to seeing the light) and both had removable plastic plugs in drivers and pass side floor pans. You just removed and hosed out the gunk. Good idea that should be incorporated (retrofitted) into early broncos. Just how many rusty floor pans (ie the grooves) would still be pristine? My eb had indoor/outdoor carpet everywhere and lots of trapped moisture(read rust). Whatever you decide about floor mats and anchoring make them easy to remove and dry out.
