the 73 has really really rusted out rockers, like the only metal that is good is from the door sill down 1 inch or maybe 2 inches, after that its all soft and rust. the fenders are fine

what should i do about this?
Michelle really likes the toms bronco parts rocker guards with the side tubes (the ones that "aren't steps" but sure look like they are)

what have you all done to replace yours while adding steps/ sliders?

it doesn't have to be very heavy duty in this case, but we want to add steps into the mix.

I'm almost in the same boat as you. It sounds like you have a little bit more rust than I have but mine are getting worse all the time. There is a tech article on here where a guy installed those 'steps'. He reinforced his so they are functional.

I would personally just get rid of them all together. Move your fender flares, if you have them, up to the body line. Build some real frame mounted rock skis that you can actually step on.

I made some new rockers out of 4" x 4" 3"16 square tube, some people have made them out of 1" or 2"x 4". I chose the 4x4 tube because of my side gas tank. It does add weight, but this rocker does a great job of sliding over rocks and such.

If you want a stock look, I replaced my rockers and added nerf bars.

I am in the process of replacing my rockers with some 2"x6"x3/16"
there are many threads on how people have done it. If you use a 2x6" you'll likely have about 2" of overhang, if you use a 2"x4" it'll be flush with the door sill. I liked the 2x6 look better. I plan to weld it to the body as well as run a couple of 2"x2" back to the chassis as well. if you have questions I'm happy to help if I can, i have been working on this all week off and on.

Build you some sliders. It will really stiffen up the body too. They are easy to make. I screwed mine on. No welding on the install so I could paint everything I was covering up without burning the paint.

I fabbed these up from 3/16" with 1/4" bracing on inside. Also can serve as air tanks.
Sliders were bent for me from another member here on the board.

Nice! Kind of like what I want to do but I'm not sure how the tubing will hold up against the rocks.

Adding Steel rock skis are on my list. There are a lot of great threads and designs on this website. They can be purchased for around $300.00, but the designs with dimensional square steel custom fit to your Bronco seems like getting a custom italian suit for a Men's Warehouse price.

agreed entourage. I paid $50 for 11' of 2"x6" 3/16 tubing. I used the money I "saved" to buy an abrasive chop saw and some 2"x2" to assist in my project.
