Setting Pinion Angle

Other than using shims, do you guys have any tips/tricks to resetting the pinion angle and spring perches? Someone told me of trying to us a magnetic angle finder, is this a good idea or does it work well? Thanks alot.

The Magnetic angle finder is a good tool to have around while doing this. Hate to send you to a jeep site but there is some good info here.
