Wanting to paint the inner section of our '77 bronco grill to the original, which I believe is Medium Silver Metallic, correct? The whole bronco is primered now and going to the shop for midnight blue metallic soon. I figure I''ll rattle can the center section silver metallic in advance so the shop can just mask it off and spray the rest of the vehicle one color.

Question: Where can I get the rattle can for the medium silver metallic? Is there an "off the shelf" color that is close enough that will save me time and money to just pick up at the store? It looks like I'd need the base color, then clearcoat, correct? I'd like to get this in the next couple days so I can work on it over the holiday.

Thanks in advance.

Medium Silver (paint code V) was a 77 exterior color, but the grill insert for 77 and other years when silver was used in place of Wimbledon White should be Argent Silver.

You will not get good results with rattle can base clear IMO.

Broncitis:

1977 Midnight Blue Metallic Ranger. What color would the grille insert be for this color combo, Wimbeldon White or Arget Silver? We also have a 1/2 cab and full cab hardtops that will be painted wimbeldon white.

Thanks in advance.

Background info: we bought the frame, located the matching glove box about 4 states away and had it shipped to us. Have decided to paint original color, but since we started with a rusty frame I'm just going off the VIN.

The grille color was more dependent on the trim package rather then the body color. Rangers would be Argent Silver, plain Jane or sport models would be Wimbledon White.

However, in the later years, I am not 100% sure if this held true like in earlier years, but I think it did. They also had some Special Decor models that had black grilles. I'm also not sure off hand on the various years of Explorer models.

Drew, What color would the grille be on a silver '77 Ranger? A Argent silver grill in a Medium Metallic Silver exterior? I have been researching this a little and found a couple of strong references to a black grille in some of the '77 Rangers...... What can you tell me?

I was wondering that same thing when I posted that!

Not really sure.

I'm thinking black as well.

I can not imagine it would be a different shade of silver. And I think white might look odd.

You know that there is a method to my madness!! The '77 Ranger "Sweetie" has had one repaint and it was repainted silver and the grille was painted white. The white grill looks a little weird on the Ranger, so I have been doing a little studing...... I have even tried to find a color underneath the current paint on the grille and it seems to be black. However, by '77, Ford was using the black "E-coating" instead of red oxide primer; so, I'm not sure what I'm seeing..... I have pondered a post on here looking for an original Silver '77 Ranger, but that would probably be futile... Maybe you can help me find the answer.....Thanks

Post # 3 in this thread has pics of a Ranger that Steve out at Big Sky Broncos did. Not sure what the original color was.

Actually, the white grille probably would look better with the white Ranger stripes than a black grille.

I'm still not a fan of rocker trim molding over a Ranger stripe though.

I'm not sure if any actually came that way or not, but I have seen two recently, this one, and the copper metallic Ranger with white soft top recently sold at auction and then on ebay to a person now here on CB.

Does anyone know if Ford kept "Argent Silver" consistent across Models and years? There are Ford Argent Silver rattle cans available.

Change of plans. For $65 my paint guy is going to mix up the paint for me and spray the grill tomorrow with the base coat and then clear coat.

Next question, is there any information I can give him to get the right paint mix? Is there a code or anything for the 1977 Ford Argent Silver?

Argent and don't go by the color name go by the PPG formula number which is 8568 according to this. They can cross reference it into whatever paint line they are using if they aren't using PPG.

Good thing you are having them do it. Using a spray can would only make the painter mad at you! He would have had to remove the spray paint before paint because it would have lifted as soon as the clear touched it.
