I replaced my carb and intake yesterday. when i cranked it among other things like the radiator hose collapsing, there was steam coming out of the valve cover breather??????? Does this sound like a problem?

Uh, yep. Check the oil for water contamination. You could have a leaky water passage at the manifold.

i was afraid of that. also how long should you let the intake gasket set with ultra black gasket maker? does it need to cure for hours or can you fire it up as soon as an hour?

That I don't know. What does the labelling say? I would expect some cure time, but not sure how long. Sorry.

I had the exact problem which I figured was improper gasket alignment, but it eventually went away. Any water or anti-freeze that got into your oil pan while you changed your intake will eventually burn off. So before you panic I would suggest you run your motor until your oil goes back to normal, i.e., color and height on the dipstick. But that is your decision to risk, a better sign of knowing water is getting in your motor would be clouds of white smoke out the tailpipe.

if it is just water that got in when you did the intake, it will burn off.
however, it does take time for that to happen, and water is a lousy lubricant. I recommend an oil/filter change and then warm it up and see where you're at then. if you keep accumulating water after that, you need to look at what went wrong in the swap.
The RTV says to let it cure. but, I've never had a problem firing it up as soon as I have it all put together.

I second this idea. change the oil and filter you might have to put some oil in while the plug is out so it will push the water/coolant out of the oil pan.
