Can the stock steering wheel be repaired? The wheel an my 66 has major cracks and is even missing a few chunks. I was going to use the stock wheel from my 74 but I gave it to my Brother to use on his 66 Ranchero. He ,of course, never got around to installing it and now can't find it.

Is there a product on the market for doing this repair? How about a foam product similar to the strope wheels? I know the graveyard sells reproductions for around $140 but I'm kindda cheap and don't want to spring for it. If anyone has any ideas or a good used one for sale, I would love to hear about it.

it might be cheaper and easier to just replace the wheel with a repro. i just got one and it looks just like the original. might not be worth the work and materials.

I sell steering wheels on eBay - aftermarket 13" variety.

Here's a couple of pics.

I'm looking to stay stock on this project but i may be interested in that wheel for my "Not so Stock" 74 Bronco. Got a link to your auction?

Eastwood does make some products for steering wheel repair:

complete kit here
epoxy only here

The kit looks like it might be the ticket for my steering wheel restoration. The way i read it, you would have to paint the wheel after making the repair. I wonder what kind of paint would be best for this. Would you use an automotive paint? What would stand up well?

The last repair I made was a crack where the horizontal piece comes off of the hub on my 68 F100 and I fixed it with JB Weld. Still holding up good. You could not even see it without getting between the dash and steering wheel. I sanded the excess off and it is still holding about 10 years later.

I used the Eastwood kit mentioned above to do mine. It worked really well but was a very tedious process. Its been about 5 years now so the details aren't as clear as they once were... but, seems like the epoxy is a little unruly when you apply it (really stringy and stiff) and it takes a while to dry. Then theres the sanding, re-applying, sanding, repeat, steps that are much like bodywork.

I put a coat of automotive primer on it, then a coat of semi-gloss epoxy enamel on it. Hopefully that will hold up ok. Seems to be doing fine so far in a box on a shelf in my garage :-[

Here's a few pics of the process but they're from my old digital camera so not too good quality.
