Stock exhaust manifold to header planning

Hi,

So I'm planning the install of my rebuilt engine. Engine builder suggested I run stock manifolds for a while as he was concerned about the fresh engine damaging the header coating. Also I need to put the stock manifolds on to get to the muffler shop to make the changes for the headers.

So that said what's my best plan for attaching the stock exhaust manifolds? Do headers work with stock studs?

I ordered a set of ARP studs but they were header studs and as I sit here typing I bet they are too short for the stock manifolds. It just kind of dawned on me that the header flange is a constant thickness and the stock manifold bolts vary in size.

I guess my plan would be to maybe just bolt the stocks on with some grade 8 hardware store bolts for a while and then go with the ARP studs once I get the headers. I don't have them yet, I spent all (doesn't mean it was a lot) my money on the engine.

Do the fancy studs have a place for the dipstick to bolt to?

thanks,
Jason

Headers usually do not use stock bolts. Thinner flange.

ARP locking header bolts are a great item.

I'd just run stock headers with whatever bolts you have with some anti seize then after an hour, or at least till timing and mixture is set, install the headers. Fancy studs? Dipstick, if it is mounting to the manifold, has a hole that one of the header bolts go through. That flange is usually further out due to manifolds being thicker. Might need to bend and or use a longer bolt and spacer.

You are only concerned about timing and tune for the heat issue, once thats set, headers can go on. There really is no time limit for a new motor other than time to set the tune.
