So I bought a rebuilt AX 15 transmission that I will not be installing for some time. Maybe even a year. Right now, it has no oil in it. How should I store it? Fill it with oil until it’s ready to install?

I would leave definitely fill it with oil for storage. Probably also a good idea to rotate it a few times but I am anal like that ( according to my wife).

When I bought my NV3550 kit from Toms, they had a huge stock of the trannys. I was told by the salesman that they were bought from a supplier that had bought them out as surplus stock years before. They were stored without adding oil.
I doubt your rebuilt will see any damage from sitting dry.
I would be concerner though about any warranty issues a year after the rebuild.

Don't know how much condensation you'll get inside the transmission {you live in Mississippi ? } but I don't see what it would hurt to fill with lube and like mentioned occasionally turn it over .
