swappping d44 parts

my front pinion has alot of slack in it an when in 4x4 it pops and grinds i have another front axle me beening a novice could i change them carrier out and pionon myself or would i just chew up my gears

Changing gears is not an easy task. Look at the OX locker install in the tech section to see how much effort is involved. Plus, you'll need at least $200 in special tools that you probably don't already have. That being said, I have never set up gears, but am planning on taking the plunge on my first set early next year. I have rebuild carbs, my NP435, installed front and rear axles, and rebuilt the top half of my engine, so I am confident in my mechanical abilities to set up the gears. If you are uncomfortable doing things like brake work and tranny swaps, re-gearing is probably something you'll want a shop to do for you.
