I drained about 5 quarts of tranny fluid out of my d-20 tonight! What seals do I need to replace? Do I need any special tools? Do I have to remove the tranny from my Bronco or can I just drop the transfer case?

if you got 5 quarts out of your t-case, i'm assuming you have a C-4, right? you'll need to pull your t-case. there's a seal on the input shaft of the t-case, it's probably bad. there's a o-ring seal on the outside of the bearing retainer, you may as well replace that too.

i don't have a pic i can post, but i'm sure somebody does that'll help you.

as far as tools, simple hand tools are all you need. have a friend near by, that t-case is heavier than it looks!

Not to hijack , but is it best to split the adaptor section at the front or rear to reach the seal ?

Hey Snafu, since you didn't say, did you get gear oil out too? Or was it only ATF?
Have you ever changed the gear oil before? The reason I ask is that over the years the Ford fluid recommendations have been all over the scale, from 50wt non-detergent engine oil, to gear lube, to ATF. So if you haven't checked it before, perhaps the P.O. just decided to use ATF on a recommendation?
I don't know if this is the case this time, but I just wanted to bring that up. Sorry if you've already gone through all that.

If that was the case, he shouldn't have had 5 quarts in the t-case. I think spec is something like 2.75 pints.
