I am just doing some evening reading on my fall/winter explorer EFI swap. I already have the 1996 AWD explorer purchased.

I don't have access to fabricating things, so I am trying to see if I can find something I can buy for the 4r70. I plan to buy the AA adapter kit sold by the bronco vendors to keep the Dana 20.

Has anyone used something like the below?

http://www.tdperformance.com/Universal-Fit-Transmission-Crossmembers

Thanks, Jeff

Jeff, give West Coast Broncos a call. They were fabricating these for a while. Might be able to get one from them. Not sure on cost but they do great work.

Thanks for the tip... I would love to get one from the vendors that was made to fit. Convenience will offset the cost! I will update this thread if I am able to get one from them.

Look at the Advance adapters Web site under the AOD kit, if you had a c you can modify that Trans support pretty easy for the 4r70w they have the directions on the site .basically notch the center section and turn it around and have someone weld it

Yeah that's my problem... I have basic hand tools, nothing to weld with and I don't know anyone who welds. So I am hoping to find a premade solution.

Just curious and may help the OP. If going this route does it use the existing mouting holes that bolts to the frame or do you need to drill out new holes?

The issue with the universal mount, they're right in the way of the front drive shaft. I just made one using the stock angle brackets that bolt to the frame. I flipped them upside down, used a straight piece of 1 1/2" square tubing across. This routes under the front drive shaft. The 4R70w is just over 1" longer, so the stock crossmember frame location still works.

Thanks for the responses and pictures. If I can't find a premade one, I will have to try and make one. I do have a 5" suspension lift, not sure if that will help with clearance.

I sent west coast Broncos an email last night to see if they have any made up.

Keep in mind that if you plan on using the stock explorer AWD tail housing with the ZF to Dana 20 style adapter, the mounting surface is completely different from the Advance Adapter kit that replaces the output shaft and tail housing. The replacement tail housing uses the stock style mount with the two bolts and bushings, the stock 4R70W AWD housing uses a tradition style trans mount.

that's what I'm playing with right now, I'm hoping to use the stock Bronco crossmember, center the trans, and mark two holes. Trying to mock it in tonight or tomorrow, I'll post pics of results.

Here's a couple. This 4R70w has the 4WD tail housing and we are using an Atlas II TC.
