transmission problem: 1 and 2 gears

i have a c4 auto with a 302 v8. a few days ago, the trans crapped out. the 1 and 2 gears don't seem to work. instead of 1 or 2, all i can get is drive. for example, when i shift into 1 or 2, the bronco moves like it is in drive mode. so, it's fine for street driving, but lousy for any hills, etc - where i would normally use the 1st gear to help brake. any ideas what could be causing this problem?

I was reading thru my Haynes Manual a while ago and saw a section on adjusting the bands. This may help.

im going to drain the tranny and install a new filter. thi smay help. if not, i'll check the bands.
