I am replacing both output pinions on my 74 (transfer case)
I am reusing both the old pinion nuts and washers, when I noticed there is a rubber washer that sits behind the metal washer.
I only have one of the rubber washers, is it necessary to have both rubber washers ,or can I run without them?

You can run without them. Just use some good quality RTV to seal the splines and keep oil from seeping through. Put the yoke on, apply the RTV, and then install and torque the nut. But you really should use new nuts.
