I went muddin last night, everything went fine, nothing went wrong. drove home and to a friends that night as well. to a car wahs, then back home. this morning i got up, drove to work, and came home, then went to pick up a friend and on the way home it started making a "gringing" noise, so we pull into a parkinglot and shut it off. Start it back up again and it starts fine, but when i try to put it it in reverse to get outta there it drinds real bad and wont go into gear. neutral works fine, but any other gear grinds really bad. i need to get it outta there. TONIGHT! can someone PLEASE tell me what the problem might be? it's like the tranny isn't engaging.,,,,

sounds like you washed off all the mud that was holding your shift linkage in place try adjusting the linkage what tranny do you have 3sp or auto? also you may have flooded your tranny with mud/water and driving it may have destroyed the bearings and gears I would drain it to make sure look for dirt and metal in the oil a very small amount of metal is normal if the oil is filled with glittery specs I'd say your in for a rebuild.

Sounds to me like you you got a little goo up in the clutch. Its not a good idea to shift in the mud, thats why most mudrunners run autos. More than likely, your gonna have to drop your tranny and replace the clutch.

Sounds like clutch linkage.Same thing happened to me.(Except it happened to me in the middle of a busy intersection, had to be pushed out by a Sheriff, long story).
Are you getting good pedal feel on the clutch?Try having somebody cycle the clutch while you look at the linkages, from above and below.I couldn't figure out what was wrong with mine until the tranny was out,all the linkages were fine.Turned out that the tab on the inside of the bellhousing that the clutch fork pivots on snapped.Had to fabricate a new pivot tab.
Hope yours is easier to fix than mine was, good luck!

Ditto on the T case ... had that happen once . Something bumped it into gear & with an automatic it grinds big time ! Give that a try .

Ditto the transfer case suggestion especially with an auto they usually dont grind when put into gear I would still change the fuild first chance you get and I would give it more than 500 miles before hitting it too hard just to make sure everything is kosher

hey, i went back at about one this morning to try to get my bronco, it starts fine, but when i try putting it in reverse it grinds and doesn't go, all the other gears went in fine (i neded up taking out a mail box and going over a curb getting it outta there) driving home it did alright but when i got up to around 40ish and let off the gas it would grind some... n e new thoughts? once again it's an auto c4 tranny. less than 300 miles on it.

there are a few others here that are experts on this try posting a new thread something like (c-4 help) that should get the experts answering but I'll give you my thoughts 1 check your fluid level it may be to low. 2. Make sure your vacuum line to the modulater is hooked up if it was unhooked you may have to clean out the mud. 3. you may have burnt up the low /reverse clutch pack or band, this means back to the tranny shop.
it could be any all or none of these like I said I'm not the expert here just telling you what I know

It's gotta be the T-case. must have popped in to neutral somehow. Shift it to 4 hi and take off the front driveshaft to get you home. Clean it up and check out the shifter.
