Hi, I am trying to get some rattlecan PPG to color the hood of my new truck in a brazen attempt to match 40 year old orig. paint. I am thinking it is light goldenrod. See pics of truck and color chart...I don't have the truck yet. Are there paint codes anywhere on the truck?? Thanks, Pete

Paint code is on the glove box door vin, it will be a letter above the word color. Go get a harbor freight auto gun and a pint of single stage urethane paint from your local paint supplier and shoot it if money is that tight. Or post up where your from and maybe someone local to you will shoot it for a case of beer if you buy the paint. If your in my area I drink Miller Lite.

IF you need to paint an entire hood, do not rattle can it. Too many lines.

Rattle can is good for spot touch up, but never an entire panel; especially a hood.

I like the Stroppe-ish look of the black hood myself, but I would
suggest just taking it to a body shop and having them match the paint
and paint it for you. IIRC there is something odd with the glovebox door
on that one, it says it is blue or something like that...?

underside of dash is easiest place to see if that's original color, folks usually don't respray there unless a full resto paint was accomplished. Black hood, probably not. You might also have a different body from what came out of the factory.

Id throw in that keeping hood black is easiest method until you decide to paint the whole thing later. Why paint twice?

Our local paint supply shop can match it and mix a rattle can up. Not sure I would go that route myself but I am going to finish my hood on flat black when I paint my project anyway.

I was wondering where the blue statement came from as I didn't post the plate unless the poster inspected the car personally?

I considered buying it before the guy that sold it to you bought it...
Sorry, I threw all of my notes away when I decided against it.
When do you take possession of it?

I wouldn't go by (buy) PPG factory mix unless you are going to paint the whole truck. Let them match it with their equipment. That way it will match the old paint.

You might have to use flattener to matte it a bit so it matches the shine on the old paint. For that reason I'd use 2 stage.

I'd skip the rattle can crap. It would look like you rattle canned it.

Heard about that...bummer.

My guess is Carmel Bronze.

What you could do....is. Order a Deluxe Marti Report from the VIN on your frame and find out all the goods your truck came with originally, Original Color, original dealer, etc. Will you be able to register under correct VIN? Did you check and see if frame VIN is clean in all the computer systems?

LOL that is funny. I hit submit and both of ours popped up saying the same thing...
And then he adds the MArti info and it bumps me to page 2! hahaha

My guess is Carmel Bronze.

If it is Caramel Bronze the the paint code is "K". The more accurate Ford M number is M3340. It can also be called a different name. In Glasurit it's called Bright Gold Metallic, which is why you always go by the code and not the name.

Personally, I think that the rattle cans work pretty good for small stuff. I have sprayed rattlecanned PPG on a bunch of my interior stuff and honestly am very happy with how they turned out. Even the FJ mirrors on the outside look pretty good I think considering the rattle can and unenclosed spraybooth.

However, having said that it definitely isn't the most economical way to go if you have access to a decent compressor i would say. The cans aren't that cheap and your gonna need probably tow or three to do a whole hood I would think. In the future I will buy the paint and mix it myself to maximize what I get for the money if that makes sense. Good luck with your truck! ;D
