What could cause a coil to go bad?

I didn't see anyone mention this yet, so do you still have an external voltage regulator? A bad one is what caused three coils to blow on the GT-350 clone I had a few years back. The remedy was suggested by Monty's Mustangs in Denver and they were right on the money.
