Here in CA a "decent" ten footer paint job will run you a minimum of $5,000. Something really nice that you would show off at a local car show $10,000. Block sanding takes forever, and a decent paint job will primer and block sand at least twice, preferably three times.

Tell us where you are from, it will make a difference.

Please dont rhino-line the whole thing.

If you bed line the whole thing you are basicly stuck with it forever that way. Location does make a huge difference as labor rates are different from place to place. Materials are lot on their own. My advice would be to talk to a few guys running around with what your idea of "decent" paint is, it varies from person to person - trust me. See where they got it done, most people either 'have a buddy' or took it to a shop. In these stupid economic times every painter/body man I know,(including myself), will take most any side job and work a little bit cheaper to get it just as extra income. Good luck.

Ok, thanks guys. I'm in Ventura, Ca...near the beach, 45 min N. of LA
I'm not looking to show...just want it to look good.
Actually...wanna see what I'd really like it to look like?

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
It's for sale right now...$25K
I know it would take major $ for a job like that...but thats the color I'm shootin for.

So...$1500 won't get me close, huh? And Ryno lining? Why wouldn't I want that perm? The top will be off through the summer.

Thats pretty! Thats pretty close to what I was contemplating for the one I am building now.

Since you are in CA, you are going to pay more, just the fact of the matter. Labor rates are insane. Here are my suggestions....

1. Go to a shop around closing time and talk to a painter, often their bosses will let them do side jobs and use the shop tools. They are busy enough during shop hours doing insurance work. I got quoted $1500 up in Portland area to do this and I would be shop bitch while he painted. Probably should have taken him up.

2. Go to a couple car shows, you often can find a retired guy or reference that will do side work, I am waiting on a quote from a former body guy for my frame off I am working on right now.

3. If you plan to drive it on trails, etc, skip the million dollar paint, do the prep yourself if you can, if I can do it anyone can...and yes it does suck. Then take it to a MAACO or Earl Scheib and get it shot there. It WILL NOT be perfect but a good 10 footer. I did this with my halfcab and all in all cost me about $600 with my prep work and paying them to paint it and the jambs.

4. Do it at home by yourself (not sure but I think they are requiring people to use water based now in CA), anyways I did all the prep and paint on my wife's and it turned out decent, a real good 10 footer, cost me about 1k in paint and material.

The best body guy I ever knew worked at a place that built fire trucks...he painted my bronco (ridiculous) granted he was a friend but took care of a lot of body and painted for a little more than you are talking...If there is a local company that builds fire trucks I would check there around closing like tito said because those guys paint million dollar trucks all day there work has to be perfect.
Or do the prep yourself, it is the easiest thing you could teach yourself to do.
My paint is a good 6 incher if you know what I mean.

I could be wrong, but I think there is some confusion re: the liner statement.

I think the person who advised not to line it was referring to spraying the entire body in liner.

Using liner in the interior tub and the bottom of the vehicle as a undercoat is pretty common and popular. I just did the underbody and interior tub on my frame-off project.

Haha, he may not even know some do indeed line the whole damn thing. Thats what I was referring to, you can never go back. If its a wheeler, have at it.

As far as interior, its my preference to put a liner in the inside, especially if you dont want to run carpet. Makes for a great protectant from rust too (as long as you dont line over the rust).

A friend and I here in NC both had our bronco's painted fro 2000.00 they were suppose to sand, prime and paint. and after 2 years paint is bubbling up, cracking in places and came out of the booth with some orange peal. Im not saying you cant get a good paint job for 2000.00 but in seems to me that most people on here that talk about paint place the price anywhere from 3500 to 5000.00 for a decent job. not show but good. hope that helps

just paid 5K at Maaco here in Nor. Cal. They did all the sanding, body work, paint and cut and buff. I took it totaly apart, removed all seam sealer and did a little body work on the bigger dents and had them do the finish work on them. Overall the outside looks really nice. It still has a few dings and waves, which I expected for that price, but it's nice and glassy and it looks good. Have had some issues with their attention to detail and some contamination (search "what to expect from a paint shop") but they have vowed to take care of me. There will still be a few things, like sloppy seam sealer that will be there when all is said and done but most won't notice that kind of thing. If I had it to do over I'd do much more of the body work my self like the little door dings that are really easy to do and make a big difference.
My advice is to get every detail that you discuss with the shop you choose in writing. Even the little things. Have them write you a very detailed estimate so there is absolutly no question about what you are going to get. You should be able to get a better deal in So. Cal I would think. My biggest problem was finding a shop around here that would even take it for under 10K. Might be worth looking at a shop or two in Vegas just for the lower cost of materials and overhead.

I sprayed the entire inside with Raptor liner a DIY liner... its awesome

For the outside my brother who does custom paint work said he would charge around $4000 to strip the paint, fix any rust, fix dents, primer, paint, and 5 coats of clear. Cost of paint included

Maaco was mentioned a couple times already. Check out this thread from Admin on his Maaco paint job. He did all the prep and body work himself. I've seen and rode in his Bronco, and I think the paint came out great. Only a bit of dust here and there, and one or two small runs. Both easy enough to take care of.

Thanks guys...great help. Oh....and I got it. My first Bronco ;D
1973...bought it of a old guy who build race engines. It's got a BUILT 351 Windsor. He bought it from the US Forest Service in 79. It's in GREAT shape. I keep looking out the window to make sure it's real.
I'm a happy boy.
