what's the difference-t-type,j-type transfer case

just removed the transfer case in my 71 looks like i need a gasket kit.i have a broncograveyard book.302 3spd manual i have to assume my case is a dana 20 but whats the difference between a t-type and a j-type case?also is there a seal on the transmission shaft it looks to have a shoulder that fits into the case housing there was nothing there?

1st pic is a J shift knob and 2nd a T shift, both named after their shift pattern, and the easiest way to tell the difference between them.

If you shift it in a straight line, then it's a T Case. If you shift in a J pattern, it's a J case.

Ok, so can you put a J shifter on a Tcase that original came with a t shifter? My PO supplied me with one, so just curious.
