Thought I would finally start a build thread for my 2019 NORRA Mexican 1000 build to better document and pull together the suggestions and advice into one place. I am in the early stages but things are coming together and parts are showing up.

After much thought I decided to abandon my plans to build my 72 into a racer as it was in too good of shape and a running and driving bronco to boot. I sold it off and picked up a roller locally as it was priced reasonably and I certainly won’t have any heart ache in pulling it apart, matter of fact I think i rescued it

Any way the last few months I have been in rust removal and body panel repair mode. I finished replacements today, body work can wait for a while. The body will be off the frame this week and I will reinforce areas on the frame and remove all the stock shock mounts and do a bit of frame tidying. Then suspension, axles, etc.

I will post up more info later but here’s some photos of picking it up, some work along the way. And how it sits tonight.

As of now your valve covers are completely closed. The shop wants to run a tube across to connect them with 2 open, filtered breathers on top the tube. I don't know if those filters would work well in that area with all the dust.

What are you running for an engine? Wet sump or dry sump?

Pretty sweet.

Can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Your old 72 now has power disc brakes up front, a floor mount shifter and a host of other small things. It's a lot of fun.

Finished working on most of the frame, cutting off what I don’t need, track bar drop bracket, stock shock mounts etc. turned out the stock track bar bracket was junk so cut that off too and used a heavy duty drop bracket I had laying around and fabbed up a new one.

Re-enforced some spots on the frame, leaf spring hangers, radius arm frame mounts, both sides of the frame where the steering box mounts and a few other spots. Threw a quick coat of paint on it.

Mounted the rear springs, axle is under it but still have to cut out some of the back brace to make room for the spring perch and u bolts and burn in the rear brake brackets.

Front end is rebuilt and re-geared and then slid it under the frame. Welded the front and rear lower shock mounts, started running fuel, brake and transmission cooling lines.

Chris, what are the build rules? Is it a stock class? What can you change?

Chris, what are the build rules? Is it a stock class? What can you change?

It is a stockish class called "Pioneer 4x4 (1967 - 1975)"

Basic class rules are:

The spirit of this category is to provide a home for production based 4x4 Trucks / SUVs that raced in the 1967-1975 era.
  • The body style must have existed in this era.
  • Example: A 1977 Bronco can be legal in this class since its body style was introduced in 1966.
  • The chassis must be stock.
  • Must have solid front axle 4 wheel drive.
  • The suspension must be stock including mounting / pivot locations and spring mounting locations.
  • Spring rate is open but leaf springs and shackles must be stock lengths.
  • The maximum shock diameter is 2” (OD). No coilovers. No bypass shocks (internal or external).
  • The maximum tire diameter is 35”.
  • No rear links.

There are a bunch of other rules for safety etc, they are in the rule book here: https://www.norra.com/PDFs/NORRA-2019-Vehicle-Rules-v3.15b.pdf

Are those going to be limit strap mounts on your rear u bolt plates?

Those are shock mounts, will be running shocks to the rear cage up through the bed to keep them out of harms way and to get a little more length and cooling out of the 2" shocks i have to run. The limit straps will run from the rear cross member to the axle tube but I have to wait until i figure out the final pinon angle.
