Offroad Bronco Camper Build - Lots of Pictures

About a year and a half ago a friend of mine suggested a late October, milti day off roading and camping trip in central Utah. I like camping in tents and sitting around a fire at night as well as anybody but not so much in cold temperatures. Something about dragging myself out of a sleeping bag into the cold every morning for 7 - 10 days just didn't seem that appealing. Since the route we were going to follow wasn't particularly trecherous I started thinking about a light, high angle off road tent trailer of some kind complete with a nice bed and an even nicer heater. The basic plan was teardrop syle trailer with a bed on one end and a storage space on the other.

I wanted something with a little character true to the Bronco obsession that I could build out of spare parts and tubs I have been collecting over the years for various projects. I went to work thinking about how to join the back halves of a couple of parts tubs together into something that reasonably fit the idea. I started gathering parts and even fabbed up the frame last fall before the whole trip plan fell apart. We decided to reschedule the trip for this year and I spent a little time between my other project needs working on the camper.

The trip got rescheduled for this September and the push was on to finish the camper a couple of weeks ago so I talked my son into helping me finish it instead of working on his bronco during the last couple of weeks of his summer visit with me. This is a quick build thread showing how the design changed as time went buy and how it turned out. The pictures span from last fall to yesterday.

The Frame

The first change in the basic plan was to ditch any thought of using the old frame I had laying arond. I just went to the steel yard and picked up a couple of sticks of 3 x 4 x 1/8 wall rectangular tubing and went to work.

The Body

I had originally thought I could join two halves of a couple of parts tubs together to make the body for the trailer but that proved problematic from the very beginning. Then I realized one day that the '64 - '66 F150 truck beds are the same side body profile as an early Bronco. After a couple of months of waiting for a decent donor to land in one of the local u-pull-it yards I came across this bed. A little work to get it to the right width and I had my trailer body. We had a spare hard top without a home so we cut the top section out and used it for the tent cap. I pulled a spare small bearing rear end and a set of old springs out of my parts pile and had the basic trailer put together.

Front Compartments and Heater

The trailer has one big compartment in the rear that is long enough and wide enough to hold a twin bed mattress. The front area of the trailer has two compartments. One side holds the furnace, LP bottle and battery. The other holds the camp stove and provides storage space. The LP is plumbed to provide regulated gas to the heater and unregulated gas for the stove.

The Top the Tent and the Hitches

The top is supported by simple prop rods and the tent is made of marine canvas. I built a ball hitch for highway pulling and found a small pintle hitch for offroad. I bought a set of fiberglass flares and we cut the bed sides. Then it was on to a little quick body work. We ground all of the seam sealer out of the rain gutter of the top and replaced it with flowable sealer. Then we put down a coat of epoxy primer sealer.

I bought some single stage urethane in a color that was as close as I could find to my Bronco. It was almost 100 degrees the day we sprayed and I think I had the wrong tip in the gun so we ended up with a slight orange peel. All in all though, it turned out looking very good.

The Finish

We put a carpet interior in the bed and reassembled yesterday. Today we went to the DMV and got a title and set of plates for a home built tent trailer. We also picked up a new camper mattress for the bed. Aside from dropping the camp stove in the second front compartment this trailer is ready for its first run.

great job! have you put it on the scale yet to see what it weighs?

No, but its almost neutral at the tongue before the LP bottle goes in. I estimated it weighs 550 pounds for the title but I plan to check someday. I know its pretty easy to drag over obstacles bacause I foud a little spot to give it a try today.
