I just bought a gallon of ppg industrial enamel, sprayed great , no reducer needed and it was only sixty bucks. It took about 1/8 of a gallon.

Thanks. I want a durable paint. I was thinking of using a Rustoleum paint but not sure of the durability. Easy to touch up with a rattle can...I "think" I am doing a tintable liner on the under belly of the body.

Do a search here. The subject has been addressed to death. May want to bias opinions/recommendations on level of experience of poster.

So i've seen many different approaches, from POR15 to just paint,, but always wondered what the factory did for the finish?
Was the original frame painted? Or just a thin mill scale? What was it?

Could you purchase it in a quart?

no just in a gallon, but if you need enough to do a frame. pm me. there is an orginal paint code wyflyer for frames. several companies sell frame paint, like eastwood and por15. my frame was ecoated, so i just went with the industrial enamel for toughness, durability, and uv resistance. i know of some who have used rustoleum by thinning and spraying from a gallon. use of the search will produce much info.

Go with por15 and you never worry about it again.

As for factory coating, I think they used flash rust. Seriously, there are engineering reports from Ford back in the day describing the benefits of flash rust as a coating.

I would've suggested POR15 as well, but paint will work ;)

I'm using Imron on mine. I takes a long time to cure but it's tough as woodpecker lips.

After reading a lot of the articles, I went with Rustoleum primer and flat black. I did the rattle can satin on my steering box, so I am sure it would spray good as well. I had to do mine with the body still on and did the underside of the tub at the same time. Prep work will be key no matter what you use. All the wire brushing I did just about killed my arms, but it looks pretty good and appears to be holding up well.

Good luck!

Use an actual auto paint much much cheaper in the end. $6 a can for engine paint x at least 6 cans....you will be losing money quick...and out if the gun just doesn't wash off at the sight of gas/oil like can stuff does.

I must be the only one that finds POR-15 to be crap! Trust me when I tell you it does not hold up to Cat piss or Brake fluid. I did the underside of my tub and the wheel wells, engine compartment and axles with Black Epoxy primer and that by far has been the best I've used. I also used it on the inside of the tub before I sprayed in the liner, wish I would have done the rest of the stuff I POR-15 with Epoxy instead.

I like my POR 15, hard as nails but it will fade for sure. Gloss black Krylon over the top while it's still a little tacky works great. Your right about the brake fluid but I don't know of any paint that will stand up to long term brake fluid exposure. The cats seem to like my freshly polished wheels so I haven't had that issue come up yet.

Rustoleum satin black bought by the quart at Lowes and reduced to spray through my Harbor Freight paint gun. Turned out great and east touch up.

By the way, I had my frame sand blasted and epoxy primed before hand. Prep is key.
