Time for some EFI tuning…

Wanted to start a thread to share my experiences with tuning my Mustang based EFI platform.

I have an 89-93 EEC-IV and run a mix of Mustang/Explorer EFI parts. From the Mustang I use the fuel rail, throttle body, MAF housing and 19lb sensor, distributor and TFI (aftermarket), and the EGR spacer. From the Explorer I run the upper and lower intake, and 19lb EV-6 injectors. All of this is installed on a late model 302 block and heads with mild aftermarket flat tappet cam. The EFI is supported by a Painless Wiring harness.

For tuning I’m using the following:
  • Moates QuarterHorse
  • Innovate Motorsports LM-2 wideband AFR system
    Binary Editor & EEC Analyzer

I have dabbled with some tuning in the past with several forced induction platforms using a different architecture. This will be my first experience with Ford fuel injection and I plan to use the help of a professional to get dialed in. Here’s a few of things I’m looking to accomplish with tuning:
  1. Disabling of unused emissions components
  2. Proper MAF calibration, injector scaling, and stable fuel trims at idle and closed loop.
  3. Adjustment of the firing order to match my 302
  4. Manipulation of the A/C input for commanded high-idle switch
  5. After all this is done, tuning for additional power and performance

So off I go, time to install all this crap and get started tuning!!

:like:

It would be a good idea to check the 3 capacitors on the board for signs of swelling or leaking before you put it all back together.

I always change them, they are 20 plus years old if they are not leaking/swelling yet they will be soon.

Very interested in what you come up with here - I was just about to post for some tuning advice with my EFI setup... I have a very weak spot from about 1700-2200 RPM that just seems sluggish. I assume it is timing, but I am having a difficult time figuring out just how to time it without causing issues on the other side of the curve

I just changed caps on 6 computers, most looked OK, 1 was really bad .

Even though it is EFI and not a carb thinking about it in phases can help. My order:

1) Cold start
2) Idle in park and in gear
3) part throttle (500 - 1000 rpm increments)
4) Wide open throttle

Fun tips that may help if they apply:
1) More timing around idle can help make it smooth and stable. If your idle rolls (goes up and down) add a little timing and a little fuel and see if it stabilizes.
2) You can add timing below your idle rpm in park. This way when they idle slows down when you drop it in park the extra timing increases the idle and keeps it running
3) The wide band is really helpful but sometimes you need to make fuel decisions based on what the engine wants. For example the idle afr will be rich for smoothest idle (maybe 13:1 or so)

Good luck!

Here is a write up on how to change those capacitors. I think the expiration date on these is pretty variable and depends on a lot of factors but its a pretty easy preventative maintenance thing...

http://www.technomotive.com/howto/ecu1g/caps.htm

Cap values in the write up are wrong for an EEC-IV ECM
what you need, volt ratings on the caps do not need to be same as listed, but need to be higher than what it will see.

Geez, almost a year later and finally getting back around to this. %)

Got everything installed, got a custom base calibration applied, dialing in initial idle settings and fuel trims, getting ready for log collection on the road for more fine tuning.

Had a heck of a time getting Innovate LC2 to work with BE. Never did figure out why, ended up reinstalling all required apps on another computer (Mac running windows VM) and now it works great.. go figure!

I'll post a full log when I get some street pulls done.

Who did you use to get the base calibration and/or is it remote tuning?

OK, me too. He did a great job on my dads blown stroker (331) and I'm currently in the middle of a tune on my turbo Capri.
Good to know! Great to hear some positive feedback. Michael seems pretty reputable on the tuning forums and his online/remote tuning process seems really solid and well documented.

I was lined up to use EFIGuy back when I started down this road (nearly a year ago) but got side-lined with an injury. When I started back up a few weeks back Garry was full up so I looked elsewhere.

I tried dirtydirtyracing@yahoo.com first since I had heard good things about them, but they did not work out for me at all. Michael had my mass air curve nailed the first tune he sent me (on a 10:1, supercharged 331 w/TW170's, explr intake, mild cam, and custom 3.5 inch intake tubing with lightning MA in fenderwell).

For future reference because it may help others... If you are going to use Innovate products, you must install Innovate's software before installing Binary Editor. Failure to do so usually results in frustration.

I'm surprised you got BE to run in a virtual environment. The last I heard Clint had killed that ability.

My apologies if I gave you the impression that I couldn't help you. While it's true that I'm insanely busy (I always am), I have still been doing a lot of remote tuning. I'm just more or less limited to evening sessions.

What I typically do is write a base tune off the specs given, then spend an hour or 2 remotely getting you setup with the software and show you how to load tunes and datalog etc... Then I dial in fuel and idle settings and send you off to datalog.

From there you typically just e-mail me the log, and I lay in bed that night and make changes, then I e-mail you a new tune. Repeat if needed.

Do you stick with stock fuel pressure typically, as efidynotuning likes 55 (no vac), claiming better atomization of injectors.
