I’m pretty new here so I thought I’d introduce myself at the start of my build thread. My name is Bob, I’m a mechanical engineer and now an empty-nester. I took my screen name when I joined a Ford truck forum as an intentionally ironic description of my vehicles. I don’t start with particularly uncommon vehicles, and I don’t go for a lot of flash. But I do a lot to make my vehicles my own, so underneath they are pretty special, at least to me.
I’ve been a Ford guy since 1974 when my dad bought a 1929 Model A as a father-son project. I was 10, so he drove the project for a while, but eventually I pulled away from him, doing a frame-up restoration. Here are before and after pics.
An ’85 F-250 was my first “real” car, then my one and only non-Ford, a ’75 Jeep CJ5, which was another frame-up build.
The Jeep was a fun family trail rig until my 2 sons outgrew the back seat. Plus there’s no room in a CJ5 for 4 people and lunch. I considered several bigger options, but in the end an early Bronco was obviously the only choice!
That was back in 2003, when my sons were 7 and 8. The Bronco is “finished” now, so the next part of this thread will be a look back at the build. Since I've had ample opportunity now to evaluate my choices I'll treat this as a retrospective, and try to point out what I did that worked well and what worked... not so well. Once I get this thread caught up it will morph into an on-going build thread (because no project vehicle is really ever finished).
And for anyone who’s seen my thread on the Ford Truck forum, this thread will “borrow” heavily from that one. Which brings up something else about me that keeps me from working on my Bronco as much as I might. After my ’85 F-250 came a ’95 F-150. I loved those trucks and was excited to get a new ’08 F-250 crew cab. But I hated that truck. I replaced it with an ’02 F-350 diesel. Didn’t like that one either. So my daily driver / family vacation vehicle is a ’97 F-250 crew cab, which is a project vehicle in its own right. But at least I have a truck I like again!
