Here's a crazy question...
A friend wants rear steer and raised axles so he plans on getting 2 front raised portal axles off 2 Unamogs. My thoughts are the same the top loader 2.5 ton rockwells. You need a super tall lift to fit them. Didn't someone push back the motor and raise the frame or motor to fit Unamog axles under a EB with 5.5" lift? He thinks he can keep his 3.5" lift and I don't see it happening. He's no newbie in anyway so maybe he knows something I don't.
I'd either like to help him with this project or stop him from doing it.
Every year he wheels in the Rubbicon and Moab and comes back with new ideas. Let me know your thoughts.

I think the guy who won 'top truck challenge' a few years ago had an EB with rear steer unimog 404 axles.

I kicked the idea around a bit and looked at some axles. Rears are a dime a dozen. Fronts are getting hard to get, spelled $$$, since all the rear wheel steer guys are grabbing them. Anything is possible. There is a good article in Bronco Driver a couple issues back of a mog conversion in a FSB. Some day I might do that to my 83.

If I ever have the time and the money that's what i'm going to do. I'm not sure why you'd need the lift. The axles really arent' all that big compared to rockwells are they?

JR's Bronc has 9" center sections and portal outers. The buildup thread was very cool.

Mog axles are available, not that tough to find. With their increasing popularity in the wheeling world, there is more parts available now than ever. New alloy portal gearsets, alloy axles, disc brakes, 8 on 6.5 lug conversions, etc.

They are difficult to fit under our rigs simply due to the length of the pinion snout, it's something like 22" IIRC; not to mention that the front diff is darn near center. They come with a locker (cable actuated, there have been some clever fixes for these), and net you a killer gear reduction, not to mention the increased ground clearance and the cool factor of having them under your rig.

Mogs are considered to be a 1-1/2 ton axle, and seem to do well with tires up to 42". Much larger than that and they do start breaking.

Rockwells are 2-1/2 ton axles. A fully dressed front Rock, is knocking on the door of 1,000 lbs. Strip down the drums, and turn the outers around, and you can drop 200 lbs in a hurry. There are lots of cool aftermarket goodies for the Rocks now too, even alloy 47spline shafts (that's 2" diameter shafts, folks) lockers and loads of other cool stuff.

Building a lightweight rig with either of these axles is gonna be a engineering marvel, though I've seen a few in the 3,500 lb range.

*begging* Whatever you do, just don't make another redneck, bootyfab POS and proudly display it to the world. It's like having an ugly kid, keep that picture in your wallet. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Do you have any more pics of the suspension on your bronco? Especially the rear.
