That is what I basically did. By the time you pay up for a project that costs more because it is complete or running, you may be better off if you want to do a total restore and replace everything anyway.

And living in the rust belt, I've been thinking about going fiberglass so I can drive it year round. 8 month wait at Bronco Designs but if I got impatient, Rustbelt Broncos is a 6 week lead time on a steel body.
