Lengthening Heater Control Cables/Knobs

I need the heater controls in the dash to have about 6"-8" more cable so my fold down dash will work as originally planned.

I've seen something on here about how to lengthen them but can't find it. Any ideas? Has anyone ever simply welded in an additional piece of spring steel to lengthen the cable?

I know I can buy a universal "choke cable" and use that but I'd really like to retain the factory bezels and knobs, especially the fan/pull for heat knob and bezel.

This was all going to be just a simple re-build with slight mods.... %)
