Title basically. Tried to find the oem paint color but to no avail so far. My dad's been saying it's "mustard yellow" forever but I'm not sure. I'm saying it's a 1971 based off the VIN, my dads been saying its a 1973 forever so who knows.

Here's the VIN: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/571983014096273409/1005683715302772746/20220804_151112.jpg

And here's a visual reference: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/571983014096273409/1005683758541852682/20220721_171018.jpg
The color code will be on the warranty plate on the back of the glovebox door and not found within the vin itself. The 302 badge was only found on 69-71 so if that's original it's a 71' and your vin is a 71'. Just from looking at a 71' color chart I'd say it was code U Empire Yellow.

By the look of the tag, it's been repainted. Maybe he or a PO repainted it "Mustard Yellow"?

Looking at the paint codes for 71 there are chrome yellow (G), empire yellow(U), and prairie yellow (Z). For 73 there were chrome yellow, bright lime, and tampico yellow. Looks like 71 empire yellow is a closest, although not perfect match.

It's color coded as "2". Any idea how to interpret that to get a formula to give to the paint store? (I know i'm asking for my hand held here but it is what it is)

That would be Prairie Yellow. It’s Ford M3492. Cross references are here:
