Dent repair

Super frustrated. Spent about 10 hours repairing this hood and epoxy primed it. Drove it this weekend and came out to this in the parking lot. I can't hammer it out from the back side because there are two layers of metal there. Is this too deep for filler? Will it be hard to shape the filler on the edge like this? Any advice is appreciated, thank you. Mike

Filler wont work until you get the high spot on top of the bend line down. If you have a welder you can use a puller and then weld up the hole. you can cut a flap on the back side and punch out the crease line and then weld the flap up. This is a strong point on the hood it wont want to move with out brute force. as you pop the dent out you have to hammer the raised portion on top down. I got a dent like that at Home Depot right smack in the middle of the door on my Nissan. Looked like some one with a cart with rebar ran into it. as high as it is on your hood looks like a stray bullet when your way. That is the strongest spot on the whole truck sheet metal. Double layered and on a crease.

I can't recall exactly what it looks like back there, but on another car that had similar damage on the wheel well lip, we drilled a hole through the back piece of metal, used a punch to hammer the dent out enough to get it where filler would work, then welded the hole on the back.

That is how I usually do it. Use a punch or drill to get access to the back of it and pry, bang it out as much as possible while, like said, bump the high spot down as you go. That is a real bummer somebody done that to your truck. They knew they did it seeing how hard it was hit. Good luck, Ken

Look on the bright side - at least it wasn't painted yet!

A PDR guy would probably have a tool that could reach that from the oval hole in the brace on the underside of the hood and push it out, but not sure if their tools are stout enough to push that rolled edge out. A body shop with a spot weld stud puller could take that out in about 5 minutes though..

Check for your local paintless dent repair tech. This is what I do for a living. If there is an access hole under the hood, that is an easy repair, and you'd just have to worry about the paint after. If you're unfamiliar with the trade, Ill include a couple pictures to show you whats possible. Again, these have not been repainted.

Contacted him. Out of his area of expertise because of the location :(. He referred me to a body shop.

Its a tough spot for sure, if there isnt an access hole. Post a picture of the backside of the panel if you can.

I was working on one like that on my Jeep .. It's been 20+ years since I had my Paint store. So even though I had some experience .. I drilled a hole from behind but when I went to knock it out .. I bent my hood hinges pulling on it.
& Then if I bend one direction it pushes it into another .
SO Mine is not finished yet.
.... So I might see if 40 buck might entice a guy with a good spot welder.
