I would recommend against Grundy Insurance

I just got a new Bronco, and was in the process of getting it insured, and when I received my policy agreement, the second term was concerning.

Here it is:

2. Vehicle cannot be used for errands, back-up, primary or secondary transportation.

My big issue was with #2, so I called and spoke to someone.

I had a few questions.....

Me: So, you are saying I cannot take the Bronco to Wal Mart if I need to get something (which is 5 minutes from my house)

Customer Service: No, you cannot take the vehicle on errands as most claims occur in parking lots and while commuting to work or school. You CAN however take it to car/hobby shows, on joy rides, to an ice cream shop or out to dinner.

Me: So, I can go to dinner and park it in a parking lot?

CS: Yes

Me: But I thought parking lots were where most claims took place? What about if I went to go buy a half a gallon of ice cream instead of going to an ice cream shop?

CS: That is considered an errand, and is not covered.

Me: What if I am on a joy ride with my wife and she needs to stop at Walgreens for a monthly feminine product? Does the joy ride then become an errand?

CS: Yes it does, in that parking lot if anything happened it would be considered and errand and after.

Me: So if eating out is ok, is going to get take out ok because of COVID, since eating out is not always an option?

CS: No that is an errand.

So, you can see how they want to word this so essentially you are going to have much difficulty in making any type of reasonable claim.

Friends have had Hagerty aggreged value coverage, totaled (semi-rare import) and had no issues with the claim. I have Hagerty marine and asked a ton of usage questions and they came back with it being very usable.

I was considering using Grundy, they quoted under $400.00 for a year with a $60,000 replacement value. No wonder, if every time you drive they have a way to not cover you what good is it?
Thanks for the heads up.

I had Haggerty on several classic cars, and needed a tow one day, also aware that I had towing insurance on my policy.
I made the mistake of calling the tow truck directly instead of calling haggerty and allowing them to arrange the tow, and they refuse to cover the tow bill.
I quit them and switched to Grundy, fully aware of all of the restrictions, simply cuz they were dicks to me at haggerty.
I don't think you're going to find a classic car insurance without use restrictions which EB owners might find unacceptable.

I have posted multiple times that Grundy is VERY restrictive in use of your vehicle and a couple insurance guys here on the list weren't very nice to deal with saying Grundy was fine.

Glad you posted up what you found out and it keeps others from getting scrwed!!

thanks

As you can see the "agreement" is left up to interpretation and the chat rep "CSRs" are not who determine coverage. The policy language is what you need to read. Ive read the entire AZ Grundy policy and nowhere does it talk about where and how you use the vehicle. They use those blanket statements to weed out people who shouldn't be getting collector insurance.

Also from my Grundy underwriter:

The vehicle cannot be used for work or school however you can on occasion drive the vehicle to work on a nice day to “show off” the vehicle.

So, you can see how they want to word this so essentially you are going to have much difficulty in making any type of reasonable claim.
The person you chatted with is not a claims adjuster. They do not make coverage determinations. Also they have been in business for nearly 75 years with an A+ rating. They aren't denying ice cream stop claims left and right like it seems.

After 75 yrs and an A+ rating probably not, but do you want to have your $50-75K + valued vehicle essentially w/o coverage because you don't really KNOW if you're covered or not?

Not very reassuring is it...????

No way was I even going to consider Grundy when I called their Nationwide number, also talked to a local rep, and then had another rep in the Seattle area CONFIRM that Grundy would NOT cover my Bronco for pretty much any use other than a club event.

I know we have discussed this insurance debacle on here before but if I hear over and over again that I won't be covered it seems pretty stupid for me or anyone else to go out there and secure Grundy insurance thinking "we'll be covered because somebody said we would".

Insurance companies have more money for fighting claims with attorneys than I do.

Yeah, it seemed very reasonable in terms of price, but honestly unless you are driving in a parade or car show, there seems to be a loophole to get them out of honoring any type of claim.

I am just saying exactly what was told to me. I have no skin in the game other than to pass on the information I came up with. In full transparency, I haven't made an insurance claim in many many years (knock on wood) so it is not like I am looking for something I am certain I will need. In fact, the only thing I want is to have the reassurance that when I get in a vehicle, me and my family will be covered - which is also not a sure lock with any of the other insurance companies as well.

I'm with ya 100% trailerjack.... EXACTLY the way I feel.

I have no "skin" in this either other than to help others be aware that they might think they're covered... and when in need they might not be covered. Can't get much uglier than that.

I did the same with Haggerty for years and years when they wouldn't insure me. They changed their coverage on Broncos 5 or more years ago. I can't remember the exact date I was surprised when they finally said "yes".

State Farm has vintage car policies too. I haven't seen their restrictions thought.
Actually, the only way you can be sure how they cover is to talk to someone who has had a similar claim.

I have been covered with Country Financial for many years. I've had a few small claims, and never any issues. Most recently, my hood opened up on the Bronco a few years ago, and the adjuster simply stated, “Take it to a shop and have them quote and repair it. I can't adjust something like that with my system, and the repair costs should be well under your agreed value.” I couldn't be happier with how it was handled. The adjuster even had a local shop to recommend that specializes in classics.

That's what you want for sure.... not somebody asking if you were "running errands" or not. ;(

Hey Everyone,

Well... this thread is going to get me started down the rabbit hole again.

I am looking for insurance on our '71. I currently have State Farm. I have an appraisal from a certified appraiser who has experience with Broncos and other off-road vehicles, and was actually a 4-wheeler themselves. State Farm will not accept the appraisal. They will cover the Bronco for 37% of the value of the appraisal.

I'm really unhappy with the service. Maybe it's just my agent. I really don't know.

I wanted to increase the stated value last year. I was told that I needed an appraisal. I asked my agent for a recommendation. He said he couldn't provided a recommendation. (In the end he offered a couple of contacts; but, none could appraise a vehicle for valuation, only for repair purposes.)

I found the appraiser thanks to some folks on CB. Spent all the time documenting the condition and the added parts/features. Only to be told that State Farm disagreed with the appraisal. What a colossal waste of time and money.

I only drive the Bronco a few weeks a year. It's actually in storage in Utah. It's important that the coverage include off-road driving. The Bronco isn't a show truck; but, it's really in pretty nice condition. It's certainly not something that I take out irresponsibly. I did some high level searching for other companies to cover the Bronco; but, I haven't found anyone I am comfortable with. Hagerty said they wouldn't cover it because it is driven off-road.

I've had nice off-road vehicles (Jeeps and Broncos) since 2008. I have never had a claim. I'm willing to pay a higher premium for a higher valuation and for using the Bronco off-road. I just can't seem to find anyone interested in providing that service.

Sorry to kind of hijack this thread. Hoping that someone might have worked through similar frustrations.

Jeff

If you find someone who covers off-road use please post it up. I have never been able to find any company that would cover off-road use.

There is a reason there is a high percentage of “single car accidents” in Moab. All those late model heeps aren't covered off road either.
