Really great progress Chad, looking sweet! I was wondering if you were going to upgrade to discs on the front, easy enough to get parts for F150 set up.

I liked how you geeked out on the carb and getting it correct. I did the same on my early build 78 and it was fun trying to figure out why they had the combination of choke and idle control parts on it. The previous owner had put an aftermarket carb on it but the original carb came with it so I rebuilt it and put everything back to stock.

Can't wait to see this fine rig in person soon!

what did the original driver have on their arm to remove the paint from the top of the door? :)
I think it's just normal wear from normal arm schmoo (dirt, sweat, sun screen, bug spray, lotions) I'm guessing. There is similar, but less, wear on the passenger side as well. There is even some where the back seat passengers might have rested their arm. That seems unlikely (especially because the rear seat was removed and in storage when I bought it), but possible. Some of it is just from high altitude solar exposure. It was parked in one position for 7 (?) years with the driver side seeing much more sun than the passenger side. Gunnison's sun is pretty intense and constant. They don't say "It's always sunny in Gunni" for nothing.

Disk brakes were always going to happen. I had 2 complete F150 disk brake set ups by the time I started. Plus I know the F150 stuff pretty well. The Chevy conversion would have happened otherwise.

I had my neighbor explain all the pieces parts of the carb and their functions. He really knows those things. Chances are he will be helping me adjust it once it's running. It's weird but I look at a carb and feel more intimidated by it than a Mustang or Explorer EFI swap. LOL.

I hope it will be towed behind the Ambo someday to some Bronco events, but it will be hard to not bring the 74 crawler. #HardBroncochoices

Plugging away. Lots of clean up along the way, both dirt and wiring/hoses/etc.

New rear brakes and 3.5" WH springs installed in the back. Brake lines are all wrapped up in the back. I need to replace the axle vent hose and install longer e-brake cables.

Front end is in progress. The front coils sat at about a 5.5" lift and look like they belong on an F350. I wonder if it rode a little stiff? Driver side is stripped down and going back together. It's getting all new ball joints, bearings, brakes, axle u-joints and 3.5" WH coils.

My bronco came out of the western slope of Colorado and is painted the exact same color but it's a ranger model. Mine had very similar patina pattern as yours.

Well done!! Making solid progress and the must-do's are doable in your timeframe!
Thanks. I'm getting more confident on it driving to Super Cel!

Thank you, I'm very pleasantly surprised by how it turned out. I remember seeing how deep red the interior was when I first bought it and realizing what color it really was.

UV is hell at high altitude! But not much rust and some of the original stuff that had survived is shocking (muffler, heater control valve, paint inspection stamps, some hoses and battery wires were even still Motorcraft).

I've been working more than taking pictures and posting.

Brake system is complete, and gravity bled. All miscellaneous drips and leaks dealt with.

Radiator and heater hoses replaced. I won't be surprised if I'm replacing water pumps, t-stats, or radiator, but I'm going to give it a go without replacing them until needed.

New plugs, wires, and Pertronix ignition installed.

Battery and starter cables replaced. The ground wire and starter wires were Motorcraft and probably original. I pulled the body ground strap off the original and crimped it to my new cable, just for fun.

Motor was pre-oiled, then bumped and turned over without spark plugs. Finllay I reinstalled the spark plugs and started it for the first time since I bought it in 2016. Super happy, runs nice and smooth. I haven't touched the carb settings since rebuilding it. I didn't bring it to full temp, but got it warm. No apparent problems with the cooling system. Brake pedal feels good. Still need to adjust the clutch, I didn't try to put it into any gears.

I haven't driven it yet. Hopefully I'll pull it out of the garage this week and test drive this weekend. I have an appointment Friday at the DMV to get it registered.

More crazy original stuff. Heater control valve with 4/72 stamp, still working, didn't leak when I started it.

I have moved on to some cleaning and other pre-Super Cel prep.

I few minutes with some Mothers Mag Polish made a huge difference. They could be sanded and really polished and come out about perfect.

Interior is vacuumed and wiped down and seats reinstalled. Remaining rear half of the headliner is removed. T-case shifter indicator needs a little TLC and will be reinstalled.

Lighting mostly works, I've replaced a few bulbs (interior and exterior) and otherwise no real problems. The floor headlight dimmer is clearly problematic, and the head light switch rheostat/interior lighting dimmer doesn't work well. Horn doesn't work, but that doesn't surprise me, I'll dive into that later. I'm not going very far into wiring now, just getting it mostly functional with minimal work. It will get a new Centech harness soon enough.

Man, I am so jealous! I remember seeing a very similar bronco back on Ft. Collins when we lived out that way next to campus. It was the same red explorer only cleaner but then again this was like 1990 soo....

Thanks! I don't know if this one was ever in FC. I bought this from a guy who lived 1 block south of me in 2016. About a year later I randomly bumped into an old friend/neighbor and told her about it. She went on to explain that I bought it from her sister's ex-husband. Her uncle bought it new and sold it to her sister and her husband when they were married. He was supposed to sell it back to the uncle if he ever got rid of it. I guess he didn't remember that part. LOL. Small town.

This arrived today from the Great White North. I don't actually think it would have come from the factory with a tire cover. I can't find a single picture or document that mentions one. But this will look nice compared to an old steel rim.

Entering the home stretch of Phase 1. Tomorrow I'm planning to pull it out, warm it up adjust the carb & set timing, and test drive it.

Lots of details.

Got plates today. First polish done on the tailgate, also installed the spare and cover.

Installed new headlight switch (slightly used one from my 74), and headlight dimmer switch. I wonder why I smelled something burning with the lights on.

While I was polishing the tailgate and tire carrier, I noticed the 4 holes in the quarter line right up with the spare tire carrier latch point and there are marks on the carrier arm like the tire had been reversed at some time. There are also marks on the carrier hoop where a rim appeared to be rubbing. The four holes didn't match an OEM Ranch Hand, but I'm thinking it was some version of a Ranch Hand.

I kind of wish it was still there.

I test drove it today, only a few miles but got up to 55 mph! Drives very nice, steering is tight.

After I got it home, I readjusted the clutch per my Haynes & Chiltons manuals, and adjusted toe- I should have done these before the drive. I had adjusted the clutch "by feel" and adjusted the clutch too far. The toe was WAAAAAY in due to the F150 knuckle swap. Carb runs a little rough until up to temp but smooth otherwise. I'm sure a few adjustments to the carb will dial it in.

Temp gauge and oil pressure gauges were off. Both seemed to read better before the truck warmed up, I'll keep my eye on them. Gas gauge (main tank) read about empty with 5 gallons, and almost full after adding 6 more. If I remember that seems similar to my 74 before swapping to the larger tank. I haven't put any fuel in the aux tank.

I'll drive it again tomorrow, but I think I'm super close to 100% driveable.

Victory!!!
I think so. I'm sure I'll get to Carson and back. Hopefully I can squeeze a few more MPGs out of it before the event with some timing and carb adjustments. I think I'm in line for a proportioning valve as well, but the brakes are OK but not great and the rears definitely lock up first.
