The 2-3/4 diameter Forney heavy duty cup wheel with .020 wire is the heavyweight champion and remains undefeated.
Coupled with the Makita 5/8 arbor angle grinder at 11,000 RPM makes quick work of oil pans, heavily serrated milled aluminum surfaces, and there is no RTV in existence that can withstand the onslaught. At full speed, when the wire wheel bristles leave orbit, they will penetrate at least one cotton sweatshirt, and usually 2 layers of undershirt. Levi's 501's are notorious for catching and holding the wires for subsequent discovery in the laundry.
I don't even need to mention safety glasses, or eye-wear. After the first few missiles puncture your skin, (or one gets stuck in your cheek) you will find your PPE. This thing takes hair, hyde...and all. Don't expect to have paint, primer, or leftover goop. So yeah, if your valve body is exposed, you'd better tape it up.
This is for when you are done playing around, and you want it clean. It is well worth the effort to do everything else to get rid of the big chunks. But if you are spending more than 60 seconds cleaning an oil pan...you did it wrong.
here's a pic of my gasket remover...
