I am going to be the odd ball here. I am not a big fan of the small steps or hidden steps, but I do like a full length nerf bar or rock rail. You still get the offroad look with functional steps that don't depend or wiring to work. As far as offroading goes, the hidden steps have issues with getting bent or debris getting into the wiring and pivots.
When it comes to removing and replacing the small steps, it they work, put them back on. I let my wallet, my needs, and desires make my declensions. Happy wife means a happy like. If she is happy, don't screw with it. If you are looking to spend a lot of time and money fixing a problem that is already solved, put on hidden steps. That being said, if the wife likes the hidden look and wants hidden steps, jump on it and get it done. At the end of the day, nobody here is going to pony up money to pay for youir steps, but your wife is.
There are lots of options and I have even seen a saddle stirrup used. To each his own.
