Tearing down the Dana 20 in my '69. It's a t-shift so it has the lock ring. Any tips on getting it out? I can get on it, but just barely, with some Knipex snap ring pliers that I slightly modified, but still no joy.

Also, if I ever manage to spread it, which way do I go with it?

Thanks!

Scott

Not sure if you have the room, but when you have the clip squeezed could you get a pick or a thin screwdriver behind it and pop it out? And you may have tried it; I don’t know, but maybe that’ll work.

I don't think that will work, but thanks for the input.

Pic?
I did mine a couple years ago but that step must not have been a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, I’m curious too.
I did mine 45 years ago so I don’t remember the details. But I didn’t have any trouble with any of the components in the Dana 20.
I was doing my transmission at the same time though, so I did end up buying those specialty snap-ring pliers (external only) for use with real thick, heavy snap rings.
But that was the only specialty tool I had, other than maybe the long Allen wrenches for the transmission.

Post up a close-up shot of the ring in question.
I didn’t watch the videos yet, but will do that when I have time.

I bought these snap ring pliers at Home Depot and ground them down (thinner) a bit. Made quick work of getting that snap ring out. if you haven’t seen it, check out this video on Jason and Josie Builds.

You need to move the bearing toward the end of the shaft. try using a wedge such as a chisel. If you find a tool with just the right angle you can move the bearing out without damaging the bearing or marking the shaft.

That's what I did. I used two large screwdrivers to move the bearing and then I used some lock ring pliers to get the snap ring off. As soon as I got the bearing out of the way, I was done in about 20 seconds.

Thanks

In this video, at 12:45, that's the one. FYI - if you have a J-shift, you don't have the snap ring.

I saw the Jason and Josie video; it was helpful. I was initially using ground down snap ring pliers but I couldn't get enough of a grip, which makes sense, because this is a lock ring and really needs lock ring pliers with some knurling on them. Once I got the bearing moved out of the way, I got it out with lock ring pliers.

Thanks

Disassembled one of my spare T-shift Dana 20's today (I needed some decent shift rails; no luck) and looky what I found! An actual snap ring instead of the lock ring!

It was .050" so it was too thin. The original lock ring is .065".
