Last year, @BajaBronco and I participated in our first Vintage trip with Slow Baja - spending 6 days traversing some of the neatest places in northern Baja in our vintage Broncos - along with a lot of other cool 4x4s.
I guess we talked it up pretty well, because in the intervening year, several of our friends decided THEY wanted to go and experience the adventure. I was honored to be asked to be my good friend @lars' co-dog in his awesome blue '70 Bronco. Andrew brought his friend Tim and the new owners of the Kaysinger Racing Bronco, aka "Torch" brought the truck back to Baja for this adventure. In addition, our friends John and Dani Lindblom joined us in their 80 Series LC. Some of you may recognize John's name - he started the Broncofix mailing list and forum years ago, was instrumental in the SOB events in Oregon for years, and if you've ever used the phrase LUBR - you can thank John as he coined it years ago. John and Dani still own their '74 Bronco too. In addition, there was another Baja Bronco on the trip - a green '73 that @BajaBronco of course owned at one point
. The Jones boys (Dad and 2 sons) are the proud owners of this beautiful rig and we enjoyed getting to know them as well.
In addition to the EBs, we also had 2 Scouts, a Nissan Patrol, and a surprising number of FJ's (40s, a 43, and a 45) on this trip as well. Thankfully we had fewer mechanical issues on this trip so that aspect of the trip went a little smoother this year. Although we ate nearly the same thing this year as we did last year, the food seemed better to me this year - maybe I was just hungrier! Octopus tacos were a new one for me this year.
Thankfully, we dodged all the hurricanes in the area this year - Rachel came through the week before us this year. One night's camp was full of mosquitoes due to her presence but otherwise we experienced little effects other than some more standing water at a few spots.
As I noted earlier, I had the pleasure of riding with Lars in his Bronco this year. What a treat. His Bronco with the fuel-injected 408 and fresh 4R70W moves with some alacrity and Lars loves to push that skinny pedal! I was blessed to drive it some as well and this truck, frankly, is like none other that I've driven. No squeaks, rattles, shakes or quivers. Tracks straight and true. Excellent braking and that engine just loves to run! On our 5th day, we once again visited Lake Chapala (usually dry) where Lars' rig and the race Bronco were fan favorites for ride-along sessions.
All in all - another great trip. It's been tough re-adjusting to work and regular life this week after such an incredible time in Baja.
If you've ever thought about going to Baja but might be a bit nervous about going by yourself - sign up with Slow Baja and enjoy the ride. Go slow and say hello!
Next year's trip is already sold out but Michael Emery will keep doing them in the future.
Hopefully others will share their experiences and photos here as well.
