first gear don't work!

a friend and i just finished a 5.0 motor swap and np 435 tranny swap on his 70 6cyl Bronco. we went offroading this weekend a Rausch Creek and everything worked fine except when you put the truck in first gear it made a terrible grinding sound when you let the clutch out. would this be a clutch...
