    Harmonic Balancer

Update: Tach connected and double checked TDC location of number one cylinder and which set of degree markers it landed on the harmonic balancer. On the compression stroke, top most position with the piston, it landed on the OTHER set of indicators (not the one I had originally marked in the...

    Harmonic Balancer

Ohhh, that makes since now! I have the dial-back type of timing light and am going to hook up a temporary tach as well to dial in the idle speed.

    Harmonic Balancer

Appreciate the help, it's unnerving to not see a bTDC and aTDC on the balancer but I guess as long as it's idling well and total timing is in the mid-30's and no pings I 'should' be good. I re-seated the distributor just to line up better and the cap was close to bumping other things. Will...

    Harmonic Balancer

I verified TDC taking the spark plug out of cylinder 1 and feeling for pressure on the compression stroke as well as inserting a taped screwdriver to 'feel' when it was at the highest possible position. It does line up with the tab at 0° on the harmonic balancer as well. I then took off the...

    Harmonic Balancer

Question for ya. If the initial timing is 8-10 bTDC, using this harmonic balancer from Summit, what did you do to confirm you're in the right spot? Mine is 8-10 after 0 with cylinder 1 on the compression stroke at TDC and it runs but wondering if it could be better?

    Door gap and weather stripping

Hey guys, I am getting ready to go on my first longer than 4 mile trip and thought I'd try and seal up the air gaps around the doors. Well I purchased the weather stripping and did a test fit only to notice the WIDE variance from the B pillar to the rocker panel and up the A pillar (see...

Advise on floor Hurst 3-speed shift boot cover

Nice! I have a neighbor who does his own metal work and has a CnC machine. Think we're going to try and fashion up a frame then 'create' a leather boot for each. Will post pictures when done hopefully soon! Thanks everyone for the ideas!

Advise on floor Hurst 3-speed shift boot cover

I had tried to see if bending would work but the hole in precut Tom's Offroad would have to be opened even more.

Advise on floor Hurst 3-speed shift boot cover

Hey, guys. I have the shift linkage and related things settled for the Hurst shifter and it drives fine. I'm wracking my brain trying to come up with a decent cover and boot to clean this up and keep out the heat/air/etc.. I purchased the metal box type fitting from Toms Offroad but due to...

Throw out bearing or something else on new clutch/trans rebuild- What's that noise with video?!

Just to close this topic out, I dropped the transmission and removed the flywheel/flexplate/clutch and you can see the issue. Replaced the shield plate with a new unit and put everything back together. Now she runs smooth and no sounds like before! A lot of work but worth it to know it's done...

Throw out bearing or something else on new clutch/trans rebuild- What's that noise with video?!

I think it's the flexplate rubbing on the metal shield, that would make since.

Throw out bearing or something else on new clutch/trans rebuild- What's that noise with video?!

I bet that's it, great. That's a crap ton of work to replace a $39 part, sigh. Guess it's not detrimental to run for a bit while I finish the build?

Throw out bearing or something else on new clutch/trans rebuild- What's that noise with video?!

Now that I think about it, the backplate between the bell housing and block was warped a bit but I put it back on figuring it would flatten out when bolted down. Could that be it?

Throw out bearing or something else on new clutch/trans rebuild- What's that noise with video?!

I continue the build on my 1971 Bronco and have the transmission back in and working well, or so I thought. I hear the noise linked in the video below while not in gear at idle. I had my son press in the clutch pedal and it does not change. It does go away when put into gear and slowly let...

3-speed manual clutch - wheels stop immediately in gear when pedal engaged

So I removed the rear brakes completely and put the wheels back on with the entire vehicle on stands. Put it in 3rd and let it run for a minute then pressed in the clutch and the wheels continued to spin and slow down gradually. So I think the brakes and maybe the rebuilt differential etc.. was...

3-speed manual clutch - wheels stop immediately in gear when pedal engaged

Yeah, I have the 4-disc propositioning valve and used the plastic plug when bleeding the brakes first go-round. Will zero-out here this afternoon and start again to see if there is any difference.

3-speed manual clutch - wheels stop immediately in gear when pedal engaged

I pulled off one of the Toms Bronco calipers last night to replace a rear axle seal. Think I'll pull the other side and just put the wheels back on without any brakes and test again. Thanks for the help.

3-speed manual clutch - wheels stop immediately in gear when pedal engaged

71 Bronco with a rebuilt 3 speed transmission and refreshed dana 20 transfer box performed by a local shop. Rebuilt engine with new clutch disc/plate and have good engagement with gears overall (still some linkage adjustment to do). Behavior that's got me confused is when in gear (2H on the...
