Cooling System Pressure and Thermostat questions

Update: Hopefully this will help someone out there in the future. The thermostat was bad. It failed all the way open, as designed. The pressure I was confused about was most likely a combination of 1- constant water flow and 2- higher than normal flow due to the smaller than stock pulley I put...

Cooling System Pressure and Thermostat questions

Yesterday while driving my bronco I noticed the temperature guage was not registering. I grounded the sending unit and the gauge maxed out, so I know the gauge and wiring works. I assumed it was the sending unit. This afternoon I decided to remove the sending unit before driving it while the...

INFORMATION - Fuel pump leaking oil!

That is my concern. My PCV is going straight to my intake manifold vacuum tree, the same as my brake booster hose.

INFORMATION - Fuel pump leaking oil!

Folks, if you are a victim of your mechanical fuel pump leaking oil out of the weep hole, this is for you. I have been through several of these over the last three years on both my original engine and my new engine (18 months old). I noticed oil on my filter and fuel pump. I (you) assume it’s...

    Oil leak (Mystery)

What do you mean? Sorry, just wondering.

    Oil leak (Mystery)

Yes, mine looks just like that, except my pickup disk is flat and sits horizontal while yours is vertical.

    Oil leak (Mystery)

It is an aftermarket pan from Tom’s. I bought and installed it in July of 2022. I had no idea it was touching. I did end up measuring the pump. I ordered another “stock” pump from AutoZone to compare. It was a little shorter. The pump I had was 5 1/8” tall to the top and the Melling from...

    Oil leak (Mystery)

UPDATE: It’s the oil pump bolt that pushed through the oil pan. Nothing is loose that I can see. I’m going to weld up the hole on the outside to ensure I don’t make the clearance issue worse. I called Tom’s and asked if it was a common issue. They said it is. The oil pan will not accommodate an...

    Oil leak (Mystery)

It runs great, other than the light tick. I’ve put 8k miles on it in the last 18 months. I do indeed drive it every day. I also use the reusable gaskets and love them. I’m very curious about what I’m going to find when I get in there.

    Oil leak (Mystery)

The knock always goes away when I top it off; for a little while. It really sounds like a lifter tick more and more. Tomorrow I will be dropping the pan to see what’s going on down there. I agree with ba123, it looks like it came from inside. I’m trying to think what is in that corner that would...

    Oil leak (Mystery)

Thanks everyone for all of the ideas and suggestions. Paul, yes, I did mean to say fuel pump. Unfortunately, a compression check is not possible. My neighbor borrowed my tester and is out of town for a week or so. I have been through 3-4 fuel pumps in 3 years. Each one starts blowing oil out of...

    Oil leak (Mystery)

Slow leak, I am familiar with the oil pump seal. I went through 3 of them on my old engine prior to replacing it. I don’t think that is it, but it does merit a look, thanks. I just pulled all of the plugs and have provided links below. It looks like it’s running a bit lean IMO. Cylinder 5...

    Oil leak (Mystery)

It’s probably closer to 1/3 qt every 4-6 weeks. Either way, too much. I have been thinking about the UV dye idea. I haven’t pulled the plugs recently. I’m about to hear in about a half hour after I’m done with my nightly duties. I will post pics in a short while.

    Oil leak (Mystery)

I installed a rebuilt 302 about 18 months ago. Back in October I noticed a slight knocking and immediately checked the oil and it was about a 1/2 quart low. I refilled it and looked for a leak. I found a slight leak under both valve covers (very small). I also found a light amount on the oil...

    302 engine temperature too low?

So I ran my Bronco in the annual Christmas parade last night. It maintained 185 degrees for two hours, in gear, at a snails pace while it was 67 degrees outside. I would say my cooling is is solved. I have to say the slightly smaller pulley really did the trick. Thanks for all of the input and...

    302 engine temperature too low?

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. It was raining all day so I went ahead and pulled open the thermostat housing to investigate. I had completely forgotten that I purchased a “failed open” thermostat when I rebuilt the engine last year. As you can see from the link below, it did...

    66-77 Bronco upgraded fuse block

Last summer I recall seeing someone with an upgraded fuse block. If I recall it was a direct swap/fit. I’ve looked around and can’t find one anywhere now. Do they exist or am I having a “senior moment”?

    302 engine temperature too low?

I just bought a new 185 degree thermostat. I’m wondering if I should wait until “after” the parade to change it. It’s only a week away. I don’t think it will hurt it. I would much rather it be between 120-130 during the stop and go crawling parade pace than 185/190 degrees in case it starts to...

    302 engine temperature too low?

Yes, I’m getting heat inside. It’s 40 degrees here today and comfy inside. I measured the temps with an infrared thermometer. It’s 131 degrees going into the radiator, 118 coming out. The thermostat housing was 124-130 degrees.

    302 engine temperature too low?

I have a 1973 Bronco with a 302. The motor was rebuilt about 15,000 miles ago. Over the summer here in VB it would heat up when sitting in traffic or a drive-thru to around 220 or more. I replaced the original radiator with an aluminum 3 core about a month ago. I also recently replaced the...
