#1 TDC and rotor points at #6????

I was replacing my spark plug wires (dam mice), and was double checking #1 TDC to get the plug order right and discovered that when I'm on the power stroke (both valves closed) the rotor points to where #6 should be according to the book. My old plug routing was/is the correct order for a 302 given where #1 is currently pointing, but now I think I'm backwards?

My question is does it matter if the rotor is pointing in the right direction according to the book or does it only matter if the wires are routed correctly? The engine runs great the way it is by the way, so it is not 180 out.... Thanks...

It doesn't matter where the rotor points as long as it's pointing at the #1 spark plug wire and you are able to rotate the dizzy enough back and forth to set the timing properly.

Are you sure you are really on #1 compression? at the top of exhaust both valves are close (actually very close to it) and may look like compression.

If you give the engine a quarter turn and a valve for #1 opens then you are not on #1 compression, you are on #1 exhaust.
