Heard this a while back from a bronco hoarder that the 1966 bronco wheelcover was made from the same die as the 1953 mercury. ebay has mercury wheelcovers listed all the time.

guy said that if you carefully remove the mercury man center and paint the grooves black you got a 1966 bronco cover.

I tried it.

Money saved can go towards finding the rear covers.

Still not the same. Can tell a glance what they are, if you know what to look at. Problem is some are trying to sell them as original. Buyer needs to be aware!!

Not suggesting anybody go into the pirate wheelcover business.. lol.
just saying you can look as good for less.

What are the differences so buyers online can beware?

thanks.

Smart Ray. I like em. Nice work. If I lose one of mine I'll go that way.

The orignal Bronco front caps have a rolled hem on the hole for the hub. Also, the profile of the ridge of the smallest embossed ring is slightly different, as is the spacing and or number of cleats that secure it to the wheel.

I had someone who is supposed to be well known with early restorations and a long time collector of 66 caps sell me a couple Mecury's that he represented as real ones last year.

IMO, it is fine to do this, but DO NOT try to pass them off as real ones!

Since the this thread got brought up, I'll add that the tabs on the back of bronco caps are in sets of three, whereas the the back of the Mercury caps have tabs evenly spaced all the way around.
