I would like to convert my '66 non-self adjusting brakes to self adjusting. Any advice on best way to do this? The slot to turn the adjusting screw is in the same place on both right and left backing plates, unlike later Broncos.

If I remember correctly, I had to add an additional adjusting slot on the drivers side backing plate to be able to use the 67 adjustable brake setup.

Here's a picture where you can just see the 2 slots for adjusting.

1966 brakes

Thanks mrdrnac. I thought that might be the case. I hate to drill holes in the backing plate to make another slot, but can't figure out any other way for the adjusters to work on the driver's side. Your photo helps a lot

Thanks, Rex

My self adjusters never worked well anyway. Did not seem to keep up with proper adjustments, so I would manually adjust mine every few weeks (it was a daily driver then) to keep them perfect unison.

That was more my reasoning for wanting rear discs than anything to do with power or reliability or parking brake issues. It was for maintenance (or lack thereof) and no longer having to mess with them. And changing pads in just a few minutes, vs a couple of hours of messing about with shoes would be another big bonus!

Had no problem adding the 67 adjustable brake set up to mine. They work great.
