I am replacing my brakes. Yes at this point I need to stay with drum up front. The question I have is I can't get all the hub stuff out to do my brakes. I removed both snap rings and the piece you turn to put into four wheel drive. I can not see anything keeping the stuff in there. Any suggestions much appreciated.

There are two large nuts with a locking ring between them that hold the outer bearing and drum on. It takes a special socket, available at most auto parts stores, to remove them.

The ring with the bolt holes in it for the hub has to be pulled out. put the screws in it and pull on those. its a really tight fit. then the center dog coupling comes out in 2 pieces. the center piece usually isnt too hard to pull out. the outer piece underneath is splinned into the drum hub splines. this one can be really hard to get out if the splines are rusty and dirty. if it wants to come out at all rocking it back and forth while pushing and releasing against the spring behind it will usually walk it out. After that you can get to the spindle nuts.

There is a bigger retainer ring in there that is hard to see sometimes. Run a screwdriver around the groove inside the hub and you will find the end of the ring. I take two small screwdrivers to hold the one end while picking the other end out. That is the retainer that holds the splined axle ring in. Ken
