1977 Bronco Fuel Doors

I have a 1977 Bronco with two fuel doors. The rear fuel door opens but the front it sealed shut. This is a 2 owner truck, the original owner said that the truck was ordered with (came with) only 1 tank and that the front door was inoperable from the factory.

Has anyone heard of this or does anyone have the same setup?

All '77's had the two fuel doors, but some only came with one tank. You are correct, the front fuel is "bolted" shut if it was only a one tank truck. I also have an original '77 that only came with one tank, and it is just as you describe. I have seen '77's with only one fuel door, but they have usually had quarter panel replacement. This way they usually wind up with one door .

No, there is no secondary tank selector on the dash. I am glad to know that there are others out there with this setup. It is funny what car manufacturers did back then. Thanks for the information!

Thanks, I thought for sure the seller was pulling my leg, glad to know he wasn't.

Pearlcoat's trail rig had this. We welded the front one shut and smoothed it when we repainted. So she has a 77 with only 1 fuel door! Before that the Warflare covered part of the door and it looked a little odd. You can see the missing door in this pic from Rausch last month. (The orange one - sorry best pic I have of it.)

I never stop learning...that's pretty interesting to know. So is there a way to open the fuel door? What size tank is the main tank?

If it has an auxillary tank, it opens like any fuel door; if it doesn't have a tank, you don't open it. The rear tank on '77's is a 14.5 gallon capacity.

I had seen a very few with only one door, but it sounds like they must have been customized by the owners. Even back then.
It was so long ago though, that even though I was pretty sure that there were supposed to always be two, I "assumed" that some came with only one from Ford anyway.

By then I'd already learned that things can be pretty inconsistent where year-model and option changes were concerned.

We removed one door on Pearlcoat's trail rig as I said in my previous post, but I saw one at this year' Super Celebration that had the rear quarters replaced. In that case the owner opted to only reinstall the rear door and not reinstall a dummy door - which makes a lot of sense.

I did have a 77 with one tank and the front fuel door was made inoperable. Others I've seen were the same but done so differently which leads me to believe it may have been done at the dealerships.
