Your friends 5.8 is the 335 series engine with a C6, not a Windsor and C4 like you have probably been looking at previously. Different beast.
If it was a 2 Wheel Dr. truck of that year it could've had a Windsor and a C4. But the four-wheel-drive's all had 335 series engines and either a C6 automatic, the NP435 or T18 manual.

Oops, I meant to add that the 335 series engines were in the same family as the Cleveland. Shared many of the same parts except for the engine block itself.
The 5.8 and 6.6 engines that came in the 78 and 79 four-wheel-drive trucks all share the bell housing pattern with the larger 460 engines. Though though inspection plate for a 460 is probably different, they still use the C6.

I also meant to say welcome to Classic!
