Will the trans cooler from a 1996 5.0 explorer work with my c4? I’m aware of the fitting size difference which is easily overcome. Want to see if the cooling will work effectively..

Thanks!

I'll go with what 904 said.
With added variables of gear ratio and tire size. 3.50 gears and 33" tires will never find a cooler big enough.
OEMs know what they are doing, and they all run an oil to water heat exchanger.

Ok. My takeaway message is to use the in-radiator cooler. Perhaps even add a supplemental cooler.

Truck build details: 94 5.0 with serpentine, carb, c4, 4.11 gears, 35s, 1994 explorer radiator

Plan is to beat on this truck a little bit while keeping it drivable. All feedback and advice welcome.

I used the stock cooler from a 98 Explorer on mine, and it was in conjunction with the cooler in the radiator. The fittings were 3/8 hose barb. Keeps my 4R70W in the mid 180s, even while wheeling in 100* + temps. It's a good plate style cooler. With minor tweaks to the mounts, it bolts easily behind the grill.

I’m giving up on using the radiator cooler and remote cooler combo. I created a new thread asking for cooler suggestions.

The 96 with tow package has good tranny cooler that fits nicely in front of the EB radiator
Two if them will also fit.

The '96 FSB aux trans cooler isn't terribly large (see sig) and the system uses the liquid to liquid HE in the radiator. The Mishimoto liquid to air cooler link that Lars posted in the other thread is a far large HE.

That is the cooler to which I am referring to, the one on my '96 FSB w/ 5.8L/Auto.

Update - I just ordered an 8x12 remote cooler as supplement. I’m debating making the Amazon import radiator integrated cooler work vs using a 2nd, larger remote cooler in series. Still haven’t decided.

it’s a cheap (not cheap $-wise) radiator that I’m afraid will crack under heavier abuse risking coolant entering the trans.
